Abbe May released her new album Design Desire on July 8th through Source Music / MGM and it has got to be said that this is a little cracker of an album.
So, what does the album sound like? If you like Adalita, Magic Dirt, PJ Harvey, the vocal tones of Portishead and/or the songwriting skills of Liz Phair then I think this album by Abbe May might just be the one for you.
From the album opener ‘Design Desire’ the tone is set for a rolling rock’athon grindhouse of an album. In fact, the track ‘Universes’ sounds like it has come straight off the back of the Desperado soundtrack. If you’ve know the low thumping guitar riff tracks by Los Lobos I’m talking about (no, not the La Bamba track but their proper bluesy tracks), then you’ll know exactly what I mean. Abbe May could easily write the soundtrack to the next Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino movie collaboration.
Since getting this album, I’ve read some very favourable reviews of ‘Design Desire’ and the time may just have come for Abbe May to grab our attention. Certainly with the likes of Mammalian Locomotion and Taurus Chorus and their Lenny Kravitz vibe she’s destined to get bigger.
If you’re thinking of purchasing her album or have got it already, you should also know that Abbe May is on the road throughout Australia over the coming months to promote Design Desire. She was originally down to play The Toff in Melbourne but it looks like this has been shifted to The East Brunswick Club which hopefully was for the bigger capacity.
Oh, and if you were wondering which track has the Portishead vocal tones, check out ‘No Sleep Tonight’ as this is a belter. In the hands of a fine remix producer, I reckon there could be a little bit of synth and electro bass layered over this track to appeal to a different fan base entirely.
Do yourself a favour and get Abbe May on Your Music Radar. She is certainly on ours!!!
