What So Not brings Anomaly alive in Melbourne

Australian electronic producer What So Not brought his Anomaly album to life in a spectacularly visual fashion at the Northcote Theatre, Melbourne on Saturday night. Backed by a pumping crowd of dance music lovers, What So Not delivered a vibrant show combining his signature future bass sound with stunning visuals tailored to each track.

From start to finish, Christopher John Emerson aka. What So Not, brought Northcote Theatre alive and it perfectly translated to a visual performance that had everyone going. Segueing into tracks off Anomaly, What So Not took fans on a journey through the album’s lush sonic soundscapes whilst dropping into some hard-hitting basslines, all timed perfectly to bursts of color, light and holographic video and 3D imagery. I love this theatre but this show could easily be taken to an arena.

It wasn’t long before his remix of The Presets’ ’14U+14ME’ had fans (and myself) jumping. As the catchy vocals soared over some hard synths, the backdrop displayed geometric patterns and flashes matching the beat and it was pretty sensational. I love a good remix when it is done right and that’s a fire one for sure.

What So Not truly shined when he played the tracks from the album that had featured vocalists, like MØ, through the track’s video visuals. As MØ’s voice cut through on ‘Mercy’ the backscreen imagery amplified the track’s raw energy.

All of these projections on the video screen helped songs from Anomaly resonate even more powerfully live. A fave moment for me was hearing and seeing the light show for What So Not’s collaboration with George Maple on ‘Gemini’. To say it was a crown pleaser is an understatement.

Having followed What So Not’s evolution since his early EDM days (and early YMR days) back in 2012, it’s awesome to see how his production and live shows have progressed. The Anomaly tour showcases his vast talents as a producer and live performer (and theatre producer) and we can’t wait until the next time comes around to see him live.
